A grinder is a machine tool to which two discs are mounted on both sides of the machine. These discs are on a shaft coupled to an electric motor. When the motor starts to work, the disks rotate allowing various tasks to be carried out depending on the type of disk that has been mounted.

- Polishing and brightening of metals .
- Remove burr from parts that were machined.

How does a grinder work
The operation of a grinder is based on an electric motor, usually from 1 to 3 HP. This electric motor is coupled to a shaft, which in turn has emery wheels at each of its ends. These are covered with protectors for safety reasons.
When the engine starts to work, the shaft begins to rotate, transferring this movement to the grinding wheels. With the wheels turning, it is enough to support the material or the tool that we want to work on.
The person in charge of performing the task must be able to hold, move and remove the material or tool when the task is completed. In the following video we can see a person working with a grinder.
Types of grinders
They are small machines, usually weighing around 6 or 7 kg, which is located on a workbench. This type of grinder is widely used for sharpening cutting tools (such as blades, drill bits , chisels , among others) and also to remove burrs that may remain on parts that were machined.
Pedestal grinders are larger machines than bench grinders. These are used to perform heavier work such as cleaning welded parts and to remove burrs from large castings. The motor power of these machines ranges from 1/3 to 5 HP.
They are a combination of a grinder with a sander . They have an emery wheel at one end while a belt sander at the other. There are also grinders that have belt sanders on both sides.
Parts of a grinder
The parts of a grinder are summarized in 4 large groups:
- Electric motor: Motor activated through a button that generates energy for the movement of the grinding wheels.
- Shaft: Transmits the movement of the motor to the emery wheels
- Emery wheels: They are discs of emery material that, when rotating at high speeds, allow finishing, sharpening, among others, to be carried out.
- Protectors: They are strong parts made of resistant material that prevent human contact with the teeth.
