Hubble Telescope

The Hubble telescope, launched in April 1990, was responsible for capturing extremely important images for studies related to the universe.

Designed in the 1970s and 1980s, the Hubble Space Telescope was launched in 1990 and provided a revolution in astronomy. The images captured through the lens of this telescope revealed a much larger and more beautiful universe than human beings had imagined.

To get an idea of ​​the precision in the formation of Hubble images, through it, it is possible to see a soccer ball 51 kilometers away. Such precision allows the detailed observation of celestial bodies .

Hubble structure

The main element of the Hubble telescope is a mirror 2.40 m in diameter. This mirror characterizes it as a reflecting telescope. Hubble is 600 km from the Earth’s surface and has a period of revolution around the planet of approximately 95 minutes. The energy required for the operation of this equipment is captured through two solar panels of approximately 30 m 2 each. The total mass of the telescope is approximately eleven tons.

Who is Hubble?

Edwin Powell Hubble (1889-1953) was an important American astrophysicist who was responsible for discovering celestial bodies and determining the distances between various galaxies.

In 1929, Edwin Hubble demonstrated that galaxies are moving away with enormous speeds and that the movement of these immense celestial bodies is accelerated , that is, the speeds of separation increase more and more. Through the light emitted by the most distant galaxies, it was possible to establish a proportionality relationship between the speed of removal and the distance between the galaxies.

Hubble wears glasses!

After the launch of the telescope in April 1990, a defect in the shape of its mirror made it impossible to focus images of objects. The solution was not mirror replacement, but a fix on the faulty mirror. In December 1993, a space mission successfully repaired the mirror that makes up the Hubble telescope.

Discoveries made by Hubble

  1. He obtained detailed images of nebulae, which made it possible to understand the formation and death of stars ;
  2. It generated images of more than 1500 galaxies, showing an immense universe, never observed before;
  3. Real-time view of a comet colliding with the planet Jupiter ;
  4. It located CO 2 on the surface of a planet;
  5. Planets outside the Solar System have been identified;
  6. Images of the collision between galaxies;
  7. Detection of black holes.

Hubble’s replacement

The James Webb Space lescope will replace the Hubble Telescope in early 2021. The James Webb telescope cost 8.8 billion dollars, is 100 times more powerful than the Hubble, operates at -233 °C and will be at a distance of 1.5 million kilometers from Earth.
